Early design ideas for Walnut Tree Road on display

Residents are invited to view the emerging design ideas for Walnut Tree Road in Erith and share their thoughts at public events being held from 21 November.

Design boards will be on display at the former ‘The Works’ retail unit at Erith Riverside Shopping Centre from Tuesday 21 to Thursday 30 November. The boards showcase the emerging design ideas following the first project exhibition held earlier this year.

The Council is working with consultants Studio ONB as part of the wider Erith Links project to develop designs to make Walnut Tree Road in Erith a greener and more comfortable street.

Studio ONB is also available to talk through the designs and answer questions at three sessions held over the 10-day period. The drop-in sessions are taking place from:

  • 3pm to 5.30pm, Thursday 23 November
  • 12 noon to 3pm, Saturday 25 November
  • 3pm to 5.30pm Tuesday 28 November

Councillor Munur, Cabinet Member for Growth, said:

“We want to help make Walnut Tree Road a greener and cleaner street, but it also needs to reflect what is most important to our residents. Residents that joined our design exhibition and workshops held earlier in the year have told us that they want to see greener spaces that prioritise pedestrians, but also offers space for community and art projects.

“We are keen to continue working with residents to ensure that their priorities are captured in these early design stages. So make sure you have your say at one of our drop-in sessions.”

The Council hosted a public exhibition led by Studio ONB in June, to introduce the Walnut Tree Road project and gain initial feedback from the public. Residents were able to see the early ideas for the street and found out more at the creative workshops held through the summer.

The design follows principles that will make the street more pedestrian friendly and make Walnut Tree Road a safer and cleaner key arrival point in the town forming a main route between the station, the town, and the river.

The Council aims to work with local people to develop a distinct identity for the space and to provide the former Carnegie Library with a public space that reflects its cultural importance.
